Nov. 28--Beginning in mid-December, allergy sufferers won't need a prescription for the popular antihistamine Claritin -- a switch likely to benefit both consumers and health insurers.

In a long-awaited decision, the Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved over-the-counter sales of Claritin, the most widely prescribed allergy medication.
