Turning Robert Louis Stevenson's "Treasure Island" into an animated sci-fi feature sounds like such a sure thing you'd think someone would have thought of it a long time ago.
Actually, they did.
"The idea was first proposed 17 years ago," said Ron Clements, co-director of Disney's just-released "Treasure Planet."
"I proposed it myself. At the same meeting I brought up the idea of making an animated feature of `The Little Mermaid.' And you know which one we decided to make."
Putting "Treasure Planet" on the development back burner was probably fortuitous, Clements said, since it allowed time for the development of the new animation ...
