The parent of a Churchill High School junior has filed a discrimination complaint with the Eugene School District because her son and other students of color were not picked for the boys' junior varsity basketball team this year.
Carmen Gelman, a Lane County juvenile probation officer, alleges that the coaches passed over the students based on race. Of seven students of color who tried out for the JV squad, only one made the team, Gelman said.
"I really feel my son was discriminated against," she said Tuesday.
