The Department of Energy's (DOE) new rebaselining report and a new contract putting a private firm in charge of building and installing the laser infrastructure have done little to dampen controversy over DOE's next-generation inertial confinement fusion (ICF) device, the National Ignition Facility (NIF).
NIF is being built primarily to meet the needs of the nuclear weapons Stockpile Stewardship program, but researchers agree it could have a tremendous impact on future ICF energy applications.
