Some people think of bugs as pests. Have you ever had someone say "stop bugging me," or "bug off!"? Not all bugs are bad, though. Some, called beneficial insects, are buddies because they kill harmful insects.
One type of beneficial insect is called predator (pronounced PRED-uh-tor). Predator bugs eat insects that harm plants, like aphids that damage roses. A ladybug is one of the predator insects that eats aphids.
Another type of bug buddy is a parasitic (pronounced pear-uh-SIT-ic) insect. These insects usually lay their eggs on harmful insects. When the eggs hatch, the larvae (pronounced LAR-vee), or caterpillar "children" of the insect, make a meal ...
