Article: Vaccines Show Promise in Preventing Herpes, Cervical Cancer.

Nov. 21--After decades of failures, scientists have developed the first vaccines that show preliminary success in preventing the two most common sexually transmitted diseases: human papilloma virus infection, which is linked to cervical cancer, and genital herpes.

If further large-scale trials confirm their safety and effectiveness, the papilloma vaccine could dramatically reduce cervical cancer rates and abnormal Pap tests, and the herpes vaccine could significantly prevent the recurrent sores caused by genital herpes infections, experts said.
