IT'S a case of mistaken identity, but it's killing an endangered species. Welsh pest control officers are being reminded of the differences between rats and water voles because of a rise in voles being poisoned by mistake.
In Swansea, council rat catchers have been thoroughly briefed on what water voles look like to prevent them becoming ``collateral damage'' in the war against rats.
The voles, sometimes called the water rat, were made famous by the vole character ``Ratty'' in Kenneth Graham's novel The Wind in the Willows .
