AN INDEPENDENT scientific panel concluded last week that three phthalates used in cosmetics are safe and can continue to be used as ingredients in these and other personal care products.
Activists campaigning against the use of phthalates vigorously contested the decision, charging the panel had "failed to protect Americans from dangerous chemicals." But, the chemical industry deemed the finding "a triumph for science-based evidence over scare tactics."
