Nov. 19--It was a hard year for wheat growers in South Dakota and Montana, but next year's crop is in good shape going into the winter.
While much of the two states is suffering the effects of a severe drought, rain in September was enough to give the winter wheat a decent start.
"Actually the winter wheat is looking pretty good right now," says John Rickardson, West River agronomist for the South Dakota Extension Service in Rapid City. "We had some moisture and a gradual cooling down to get it off to a good start."
