KANSAS CITY_The Rams peaked in 1999. Those were the good old days. And Dick Vermeil and Mike Martz were primarily responsible for the success, the happiness, the memories.
For sure, others played a role. Team president John Shaw nudged a reluctant Vermeil into making needed changes after a dismal 1998 season. One of Shaw's suggestions led Vermeil to Martz. Vermeil hired Martz to design the offense, granted him power over offensive personnel, and gave him complete autonomy in game-planning and play-calling.
The result, including the postseason: 16 wins, three losses, 609 points scored, and the Super Bowl championship. In ...
