"My most over-the-top evening had to be Elton [John]'s 50th birthday costume party in London in 1997. Because of his no-holds-barred dress-up reputation, people really make the effort when Elton throws down the gauntlet and asks them to don a costume. Jean Paul Gaultier came as a French maid, Julian Schnabel as the pope, Billy Joel as an Air Force ace, and Elton dressed up as Louis XIV (his getup featured a 10-foot train and a 25-pound wig topped with a cannon-firing galleon). This event provided the inspiration for an Elton John AIDS Foundation fundraiser--the White Tie & Tiara Ball--which is now held annually at Woodside, Elton's country estate. ...
