France's minister of culture, Jean-Jacques Aillagon, released plans at an Oct. 29 press conference for significant restructuring of a number of Paris-based and regional art institutions. He said the initiative was prompted by space constraints as well as by budgetary and administrative concerns.
Most controversial to date among these proposals is the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume's reincarnation, beginning in 2004, as the Galerie Nationale de l'Image--an institution primarily dedicated to photography, from its origins to today, as well as video and multimedia.
