Rebecca Miller's Personal Velocity, which won the grand prize at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival, began with a suggestion from another director. Gary Winick, who directed urbane comedy Tadpole, approached Miller about a project called InDigEnt, a series of low-budget digital features.

Miller previously had directed a movie called Angela, a 1995 Sundance hit about a 10-year-old girl who tries to save her disturbed mother.
