Faced with urgent agendas within fragmented but lengthy days, how does one lead? We are not formally schooled in leadership, so how do we know what makes a leader? Do we consult a handbook or textbook that codifies leadership beliefs or behaviors? Do we follow leadership protocols that are based on high standards of evidence, unbiased interpretation, and measurable outcomes? If leadership were subject to hypothesis testing and the scientific method, perhaps we could calculate margins of error and replicate behaviors. But the research methods are almost as elusive as the enduring leader.
