Nov. 9--WASHINGTON -- Seeking to regroup after big Election Day losses, Democrats in the House of Representatives appeared poised Friday to select a California liberal -- Rep. Nancy Pelosi -- as their new leader.
If elected by her peers next week, Pelosi would be the first woman to head either party in Congress.
Pelosi, now the second-ranking Democrat in the House, emerged as the likely victor in the race for minority leader after her closest competitor, centrist Rep. Martin Frost of Texas, dropped out Friday afternoon.
