In post-menopausal women with coronary disease, neither hormone replacement therapy nor antioxidant vitamin supplements provide a cardiovascular benefit. Rather, a potential for harm was suggested with each treatment. These are the controversial findings of the 423-patient WAVE study, which was set up to determine whether HRT or antioxidant vitamins, alone or in combination, influence the progression of coronary artery disease in these patients.

"HRT and antioxidant vitamins are widely used for secondary prevention in postmenopausal women with coronary disease, but no clinical trials have demonstrated benefit to support their use," commented the researchers.
