The government is considering imposing import duty on corn to boost domestic production. Agriculture Minister Bungaran Saragih said import duty on maize corn is possible under the WTO rule. The country imports around 1 million tons of corn a year and the imports have threatened market stability and hurt the local farmers.
The ministry is still studying the plan. Saragih said animal feed industry must not rely more on import for corn threatening the market of local products.
