In some households across the Elgin area, it's the doorbell, not the dinner bell, that rings when it's time to eat.

Thanks to one woman's vision, two Elgin hospitals and a group of area churches that offer volunteers, the Elgin Meals on Wheels program is celebrating 30 years of service today. The program delivers hot meals to the doors of the elderly and disabled.

Program coordinator Shirley Minks of Elgin started the program after reading about other Meals on Wheels programs. She says she modeled the program after one in Rockford.
