Dec. 11--When Claritin becomes available without a prescription this week, it will likely become more difficult and costly for insured patients to get other prescription allergy pills, doctors and pharmacists say.

Aetna has told doctors nationwide that prescriptions for the popular antihistamines Allegra, Clarinex or Zyrtec will require special approval, beginning Jan. 1. Doctors will be asked to show that a patient didn't get relief with Claritin, Aetna spokeswoman Karen Michlewicz said.
