Hey, Democrats, just chill on your calls for Republican Senate leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.) to quit, after his outrageous remarks about what a swell society we'd have if segregationist Strom Thurmond had been elected president in 1948, not Harry Truman.
Yes, the loose-lipped Lott has his party in the soup again, and he deserves all the condemnation being hurled his way.
But resign? That may be what Republican President George W. Bush wants in his heart of hearts. Astute Democrats must know Lott as leader would be a valuable target as they seek to win back the Senate and the presidency in 2004. Let Lott be Lott. Leave him ...
