A striking photograph that hangs on a lobby wall of the famous Lake Quinault Lodge shows President Franklin D. Roosevelt hobnobbing with other dignitaries during a visit there in 1937. The caption says the president was so impressed with the wildness of the region during his visit that the following year, with his leadership of course, Congress designated the surrounding region a national park.
That's probably a little overstated and simplified, but it's a historical indication of not only how popular the lodge has been over the years but how environmentally critical the sanctity of the region is to Washington state. ...
