INTRODUCTION
There is considerable confusion over the attributes necessary for a corporation located in the United States to be considered an "American" company, particularly insofar as nationality is thought to carry with it any entitlement to special treatment. Manufacturing production is typically integrated internationally, so multinational firms headquartered in the United States are likely to purchase large fractions of their inputs from foreign suppliers, sell much of their output to foreign buyers, and in the process often employ more labor and capital in foreign countries than they do in America.
