Amaryllis plants are used widely for study in elementary school classrooms because of their large, colorful flowers, which rapidly come into bloom during the bleak days of winter (Huey 1945; Hunken 1989; Mechling and Twiest 1982; Monsch 1917; Radue 1991; Traub 1958).
