In 1987, the Reform Party was founded with the battle cry "The West Wants In." Into Canada and the seats of federal influence, that is. Shut out of power for a decade and faced with Ottawa's determination to ratify the Kyoto Protocol, however, a growing number of Albertans now want the West out. A poll conducted in Alberta in early November by JMCK Polling found that 44% of respondents favoured exploring options like independence if the global climate-control treaty is ratified. A further 9% would like to consider union with the United States. If the JMCK poll is accurate, separation may be poised to achieve mainstream status in Alberta for the first time.
