In his recent New York Times Magazine profile of Detroit rapper Eminem, Frank Rich calls the Motor City ``America's closest approximation of hell.''
For me, ``hell'' was home.
I grew up on Detroit's East Side, spending 20 years of my life there. It surprises me that Rich, one of the Times' best writers, would make such an adolescent generalization.
Detroit natives are accustomed to defending the city against such charges. Jokes about the city may intensify as Eminem's feature film, ``8 Mile,'' hits theaters nationwide tomorrow.
