Toppan Printing Company Ltd, digital authentication service provider VeriSign Japan KK and Soliton Systems KK have jointly developed an electronic PKI (public key infrastructure) authentication system to employ non-contact smart cards.
The system employs the FeliCa contactless Smart integrated circuit (IC) card promoted by Sony Corporation, the most prevalent card of its type in Japan. Due to power consumption-related issues, however, conventional FeliCa cards are not equipped to store the electronic authentication data that is currently required by existing PKI systems.
