Dec. 17--A federal judge in Miami has accused Cigna Corp. and its Philadelphia lawyers of "underhanded maneuvers" in trying to escape one class-action lawsuit by settling another at better terms.

Judge Federico Moreno says he and fellow federal Judge E. Patrick Murphy were "snookered" by Cigna's attempt to choose the cheapest settlement in order to block bigger payouts to doctors who say Cigna underpaid them.

Cigna and its lawyers deny Moreno's contention. But Moreno last Thursday placed a hold on Cigna's settlement plans, at least for now.
