DALLAS _ Overdosing on acetaminophen, including taking too much Tylenol or Excedrin, may be the leading cause of acute liver failure in the United States, says a new study from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.
Researchers found that 39 percent of the patients in the study suffered from a severe form of liver failure caused by accidentally or intentionally ingesting three to four times the daily amount of acetaminophen recommended by doctors. About a third of the cases were thought to be suicide attempts.
