Dec. 18--In the largest high blood pressure drug study ever conducted, Houston researchers found the least expensive therapy is also the most effective in preventing heart attacks, according to research published in today's Journal of the American Medical Association.
The study, sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, could have a major impact on spending for blood pressure drugs taken by 24 million Americans at a cost of $15.5 billion per year. Some 50 million to 60 million people in the United States have hypertension.
