WASHINGTON -- WASHINGTON, Dec. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- A survey released today by The Humane Society of the United States finds that a strong majority of Americans oppose Canada's seal hunt, which has increased dramatically in recent years to levels not seen since the 1960s.

The poll conducted in November by Penn, Schoen & Berland Associates found that 79 percent of U.S. voters opposed killing seals for their fur. Last year, according to the Canadian government, 307,000 harp and hooded seals were killed for their fur in the Canadian provinces of Newfoundland, Labrador and Quebec.
