COLUMBIA, S.C. _ South Carolina has the highest death rate for alcohol-related crashes in the nation, federal safety officials said Wednesday.
The state has made progress in reducing alcohol-related traffic deaths, but not anywhere near that of the rest of the country, a federal report said.
The states with the biggest problem 20 years ago have more than cut their death rates in half, while South Carolina has improved the least.
Between 1982 and 2001, the national alcohol-related death rate dropped 62 percent, compared with South Carolina's 30 percent _ the lowest decrease in the nation.
