"A solution containing sodium citrate and citric acid is used as an anticoagulant agent during peripheral blood progenitor cell (PBPC) harvesting, and in rare cases can cause fatal citrate intoxication," explained Masahiro Kishimoto and colleagues at Fukushima Medical University in Fukushima City.
Calcium-containing isotonic sport drinks can prevent this condition in patients undergoing stem cell apheresis, Kishimoto and coauthors found.
