In a speech delivered to the Fourth Plenary Session of the Round Table Conference in London on 19 November 1930, as a member of the Indian delegation, Maulana Mohamed Ali Jauhar (1) argued emotionally and eloquently for Indian independence. He was terminally ill, with a dilated heart, high blood pressure and diabetes, but his speech was replete with wit and humour, and he showed no bitterness to anyone. Explaining his allegiances as an Indian Muslim, he said: `I belong to two circles of equal size, but which are not concentric. One is India, and the other is the Muslim world.'
