The top 10 brands of ice cream showed significant growth in the past year, as did the overall segment according to Information Resources Inc. Meanwhile, sales of American cheese have slowed by one measure or another in each of the last eight quarters.
First let's look at ice cream. For the 52-week period ended Nov. 3, nationwide sales of ice cream in supermarkets, drug stores and mass merchandisers excluding Wal-Mart totaled more than $4.5 billion, up $5.l% by dollar from the 52-week period a year ago.
