Countries with declining sales outnumbered those with sales gains, contributing to a down year for the global music products industry in 2001. The primary cause of the sales dip was an unfortunate confluence of bad ecnomic news: the continuing recession in Japan, wrenching currency issues in much of South America, the seemingly perpetual malaise that has Europe in a vise-grip, and the sagging U.S. stock market.
