AGAINST A TRADE SHOW?
E.S. Conway, president of the National Association of Piano Manufacturers, told Chandler Smith, president of the National Association of Piano Dealers [forerunner of NAMM] that there could be no possible good gained by making the annual meeting into a salesroom for business, as the real purpose of such annual meetings is to bring about better acquaintance between members of the trade. "Annual gatherings of manufacturers and retailers would be destroyed if an attempt were made, to use them simply as an opportunity to sell a few goods."
