Broadway's winter looking bleak
advance sales on broadway for January and February-always a tough time for theater-are down by at least 10%, forcing even major hits such as The Producers and The Lion King to begin extensive advertising campaigns. The Lion King has been running radio and print ads offering free parking vouchers and 10% discounts on tickets. The Producers, which is 2 years old, is offering a winter sale for parties, discounting ticket prices to $80 from $100. After Christmas, the show will release a 60-second television commercial. Most blockbuster hits don't pull out their TV campaigns until seven or eight years into their runs.
