WASHINGTON -- Trent Lott's departure as Senate Republican leader will allow party members to focus on their legislative program and avoid lasting damage stemming from Lott's early December remarks that seemed to express nostalgia for racial segregation, Virginia's GOP senators asserted Friday.
``Whatever damage has been inflicted, I'm confident that we can remedy in the immediate future and continue to lead in the civil rights area,'' said Sen. John W. Warner.
