A middle-aged woman presented to the office with a 3-week history of cough, fever, myalgia, fatigue, and shortness of breath. The patient reported that a chest x-ray, done early in the course of the illness, was suggestive of pneumonia. She had been treated sequentially with 3 different antibiotics, none of which appeared to be helpful. Given the failure of antibiotic therapy, a presumptive diagnosis of viral pneumonia was made. The patient was given an intravenous infusion containing 50 g of vitamin C, 1 g of magnesium sulfate, 2 g of calcium gluconate, and B vitamins, administered in 500 ml of sterile water over a 3-hour period.
