There has been a longstanding difficulty amongst musicians, as compared with other artistic disciplines, to explain their artistic practice to a general audience, and express why their work is relevant. John Cage was incredibly gifted at this chore; some have gone so far to say that his writings on music are more valuable than his compositions. Composer and founder of the saris-based IRCAM institute, Pierre Boulez, is another brilliant exception. He appeals to a rigorous self examination and constantly criticizes the "fetishists" who nay-say in bad faith.
