Byline: MAL VINCENT THE VIRGINIAN-PILOT
MARTIN SCORSESE'S EPIC ``Gangs of New York,'' which opens today, deals with a period of history never before seen in the movies. Indeed, it is given scant notice in the history books.
It deals with an America that was more a boiling cauldron than a melting pot. Climaxing with the infamous New York Draft Riots of 1863, it deals with a nation in conflict both on the battlefield and in the streets. It deals with racial and economic tensions in a way that is blunt and straightforward. Complete with a cast of thousands and not depending on computer digital recreations, it is classic epic filmmaking rarely seen today.
