There are four reindeer that currently reside at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park.
Tundra is a 1 1/2 year-old male that was born at a wildlife park in Minnesota and came to Syracuse late last year. The other male is Parry, who was born here this June. The females, 8-year-old Peg, and 2-year-old Vega were also born in Syracuse.
Reindeer are native to Arctic regions of the world. Laplanders and other northern populations have domesticated the reindeer for their milk, meat and fur to help them survive the extreme temperatures. Reindeer are also used to pull sleds, a tradition that began more than 3,000 years ago.
