Several important figures in the world of classical music left us in 2002, and what better time than the holiday season to offer our appreciation of the gift of great music they shared with us over the past decades.
Gunter Wand, a world-famous German conductor who made his American debut in 1989 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, died Feb. 13, shortly after reaching his 90th birthday.
Wand's debut was a coup for CSO President Henry Fogel, who had long admired the conductor through recordings, many of them with regional orchestras, many of the CDs at the time difficult to find in American record stores.
