Cincinnati traces its history back over 200 years, to the time of the Miami Purchase in 1788. Originally called Losantiville, General Arthur St. Clair, Commander of Ft. Washington, changed the name to Cincinnati in honor of the Society of Cincinnati, an organization of Revolutionary War officers founded by George Washington. In 1811, riverboat traffic opened Cincinnati to Mississippi trade as far south as the Gulf of Mexico.
