Nokia's San Diego research and development center is experimenting with "smart cards" that hold personal information and go inside CDMA phones.
Nokia earlier this month said it just conducted the first successful North American test of a specific smart card technology made by Gemplus.
The tiny Gemplus card allows people to own multiple CDMA, or Code Division Multiple Access, handsets but use a single phone number. The number only works on the handset that has the card inside. A person can also carry his private telephone directory on the card.
Nokia said the technology will help customers with worldwide roaming.
