MASTIFF
Eastern Han Dynasty, Art Institute of Chicago
If he stood near my tomb
like a persistent muse
maybe death would be the next
adventure, fabulous in its rush
away from here, the green troubled
earth that keeps me waking up,
petulant, cautious of rapture or
love, haunted by mirages and deja vu
moments. Thick in the shoulders, his
stance is alert and courageous,
ears cocked, head and muzzle lifted
as though listening to something
in the far distance. Fashioned
from earthenware and lead, of the second
or third century, his tail curls
neatly over his back and appears
to quiver with taut excitement.
