CONCERNS ABOUT the high cost of health care delivery, care outcomes, and personnel shortages, especially registered nurses (RN), abound in the nursing literature and popular media. Many health care agencies respond to these concerns by introducing or increasing support personnel. To date, there is no universally accepted role description or title for personnel who assist in providing patient care. For the purposes of this article, unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) refers to patient care support personnel in acute care facilities.
