Dec. 27--Steep discounts greeted post-Christmas shoppers Thursday as retailers hoped that a final buying surge would push sales up over 2001 levels.
Stores offered a final round of deep discounts, some as much as 80 percent, in an attempt to keep holiday sales growth from hitting its lowest level in decades.
