Back in the days when I would regularly drink and drive, I felt lucky that I was never arrested for drunken driving.
I should have felt lucky that I never killed anyone by my irresponsible actions.
Then, when my then-wife informed me she'd be happier if I took my bottle and moved elsewhere, I felt hurt and abused and humiliated. The fact that she was right didn't make me feel any better.
Sixteen years later, I can trace most of the good things in my life to the day I decided to quit drinking, not because I "saw the light" but because my "luck" had run out.
I bring this up only because the news these days ...
