How much observance does 2002 warrant as a media milestone? It was, in many ways, a predictable year. Nearly three years ago, market researchers were forecasting CD sales to plateau in 2002. They were off by only a year, as CDs and music sales in general began a downward spiral in 2001. Furthermore, the consolidation that many had been referring to in general, almost shamanistic terms for the last two or three years materialized with a vengeance in 2002. For media and equipment manufacturers alike, consolidation was the key event in many corporate lives.
